He is a cold and driven man, Vafres. Not one to speak nonsense or waste time on small talk, everything that he does serves his own purposes. Get in the way, and you risk being removed quickly and efficiently. Though revenge is his primary motivator, his emotions seem dull and blurred, as if kept behind a smeared glass wall: slightly visible, but sort of not there. Such is his capability if focusing on a task, to the point where everything else is just white noise, even his emotions, and if anything gets in his way he simply removes it. He knows what he wants and knows how to get it. No one else does though, and that can be terrifying.
Few have ever met this man and survived, and those that have aren't the kind of people you want to approach. His hatred of Laviku and those who follow him is strong, so he colludes with others on the sea who spite them for supplies and plans and manpower. Those who meet him face to face either join him or die. Such is his commitment to his cause, and such is the commitment he inspires from those who work with him.
Biography
His name wasn't always Ruthen. Little is known about his past from before his great loss, the same one that sparked something in him and is still burning to this day. His father was the captain of a trading saique that made routine travels between Syliras and Riverfall, and when he came of age he was allowed to help crew the ship. It was a happy if simple life, and it meant he got to spend all his time at sea, where he felt naturally capable. However, the ship was attacked during one of its voyages, and in the raid the young man's father was killed along with most of the crew, many of whom were close friends. It was only by luck and wit that he managed to escape on one of the rowboats while the boarders helped themselves to the cargo. The pirates were svefra.
Soon after that, the young man who would become Vafres was caught in a storm and washed up on the shores of Kalea. He wandered for days upon days, barely surviving, forced to become strong through constant threats to his life. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger though, and by the time he arrived in Alvadas he was actually stronger than when he had set off, having learned to not only survive but thrive on his own. His ordeal had made him stronger, and he soon set put this to use.
In Alvadas, he studied various magic disciplines, doing everything he could to gain more knowledge and become more powerful. He trained constantly in all sorts of weapons, and though he didn't manage to master any he became quite good in enough supplementary skills to be able to take on a small company. When he thought he was ready, he hired a boat from the small port in Alvadas and began making his way back to Riverfall, hoping to encounter the svefra pirates on his way. He did.
At first, the svefra thought they had an easy win. A single small boat against a whole pod? The thought was ridiculous. Once they boarded though, it became another matter altogether. The man who came seeking revenge was waiting for them, and as his targets began to surround the defending crew he opened every stop and poured in every effort, unleashing his full power on the svefra that stole his life. Few managed to escape, and those that did he ordered the hired ship to follow. One by one he hunted each svefra who'd attacked his ships and made sure they died, often in horrible ways.
That's when he renamed himself Vafres Ruthen. He took his title, svefra hunter, rearranged the letters and made it who he was.
